Substance Abuse Education & Prevention Program

bob_school
Bob Stutman and Judge Jodi Debbrecht Switalski provide a full-day program that includes interactive sessions with students, administration, faculty, follow-up committee and parents. The program begins with Bob and Jodi speaking to the students in an assembly setting.  Bob and Jodi will talk about the “real” world of substance abuse and the many misconceptions. The students are then invited to break-off into a focus session that is voluntary and where there are no other adults present. Bob and Jodi will ask the students questions and they will ask them questions.  They will be completely honest with the students and they will be honest with Bob and Jodi.   Bob and Jodi’s experience working with students from all over the country have taught them the necessary techniques to bring out honesty in kids. They will talk about what the student’s perceptions are regarding drugs and alcohol in their school and community, what they feel are the attitudes of their parents and the school and how they feel about the substance abuse education they are currently receiving. Bob and Jodi inform the students prior to this session that the generalities of the information gathered will be shared with the faculty, administration and parents and that the names of the students will not be mentioned unless Bob or Judge Jodi feel that a student is at risk. Students constantly remark that Bob and Jodi are “honest, blunt and do not preach”. In other words – Bob and Judge Jodi treat them like adults. The bottom line – kids want to talk.

Based on the information gathered during the focus group, Bob and Judge Jodi then meet with the faculty, administration and follow-up committee to lay the foundation for a strong prevention program. To complete the program, Bob and Judge Jodi will meet with the parents for a two- hour presentation in the evening (one hour presentation with 30 minutes for Q & A).

Bob and Judge Jodi highly encourage that this program be parent-mandated (for all parents with students in private schools & for all parents with students involved in extra-curricular activities for public schools). It is also crucial that programs such as this be repeated and that the parent education continues on a mandated basis. Bob and Judge Jodi recommend every 12-18 months.

Follow-up:
Based on Bob and Judge Jodi’s program and assessment of each school, Bob will provide a suggested course of action to be implemented within a three- twelve month period. Bob strongly urges each school and community to implement the appropriate follow-up to his program. This follow-up will consist of the steps and scientifically based mandated programs needed to ensure that parents, teachers, administrators and community members continue the education and support so desperately needed by our youth in today’s society.
